Faslane can 'expect investment' when defence plans finally published, MPs told
Faslane can 'expect investment' when defence plans finally published, MPs told relates to the UK’s long-delayed defence spending framework and its impact on the Faslane nuclear submarine base. Luke Pollard told MPs that “massive investment” is needed at Faslane, arguing previous “austerity policies” left a backlog of work at the Clyde base. He said the site, which houses the UK’s nuclear submarines, requires upgraded docking and maintenance facilities as well as improvements for personnel. Pollard added that some Scottish infrastructure upgrades have not kept pace, citing Faslane as an example. He said MPs can “expect to see investment” under the Dip (Defence Investment Plan) and that large capital spending will be required to upgrade submarine infrastructure to meet current threats. While publication was delayed amid resignations from senior defence officials, Pollard said the Dip will be released soon, before the UK’s NATO summit trip planned for July 7-8 in Ankara. He also cited evolving risks including cyber attacks and grey-zone operations.
