FISHING: Bluegills at night offer respite from heat | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Midway Lake in southeast Arkansas is providing a clear summertime tactic for anglers: fish for bluegills at night under lights. Carlton Wing and his videographer Mike Dunn went out after spotting an unusual concentration of mayflies—order Ephemeroptera—swarming around photovoltaic lights along the bank. Wing said the mayflies appear attracted to mosquito repellent, and their adult form can’t bite because it lacks functional mouthparts. As the lights came on, mayflies coated posts and the waterline, then gathered around Wing’s bass boat, while bluegills moved in to eat what fell in. The crew was filming an episode of “Wing’s Arkansas’s Great Outdoors,” and noted that fly fishing at night is harder because flies are harder to see.
