Floating fish farms near Singapore's Pulau Ubin catch fire after suspected lightning strike
Floating fish farms near Singapore's Pulau Ubin catch fire after suspected lightning strike describes a fire at sea that damaged at least two floating fish farms near Pulau Ubin on June 24. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours after it began at one farm and was believed to have spread to two neighbouring sites before being extinguished. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted at about 8:10pm, and there were no reported injuries. Investigations are ongoing, but Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported the suspected cause was a lightning strike that hit the farms’ solar panels. The farms are located off Lorong Halus jetty near Pasir Ris, close to Pulau Ubin and Pulau Ketam. One owner estimated losses of up to S$120,000 and said he could not file an insurance claim. The fire damaged equipment including feed, generators, solar panels, a fishing boat and at least three fish traps, and nets were damaged, causing at least half the stock to escape.
