General Staff: Russia has lost 1,495,050 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022

The Ukrainian General Staff reported on Sept. 5 that Russia has lost about 1,495,050 troops in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. The figure includes 1,260 casualties Russia suffered over the previous day. The report also lists large Russian equipment losses: 12,328 tanks, 25,273 armored combat vehicles, 49,227 artillery systems, 2,093 multiple launch rocket systems, 441 aircraft, 355 helicopters, and 35 ships and boats, among other categories. Ukraine’s General Staff did not disclose its own losses, citing operational secrecy. Western think tanks generally estimate Russian casualties are higher, with CSIS citing roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1.
