Hunt for 'Sharkzilla' terrorising New York coast & leaving trail of horror
xCruzo Brief
Scientists and local experts are investigating a series of attacks off New York’s Long Island that have drawn fears of a “Sharkzilla” predator. Marine expert Craig O’Connell says a humpback whale was found with 24-inch bite marks and a 400lb tuna carcass was torn apart, prompting concern that enormous predators thought gone may be returning. The probe began in September 2025 after reports of savaging near Long Island, and O’Connell’s team had about 30 hours to locate the animal and collect a tissue sample. They searched the Hudson Canyon, a 4,000ft-deep chasm about 160km offshore, amid a contested history of nuclear waste dumping and leaks.
