Inside the secret shark nursery lurking just off New York's ritzy Hamptons

Just off New York’s Hamptons, marine researcher Greg Metzger helped capture and tag a young sand tiger shark as part of a broader program to study local marine life and a documented great white shark nursery. Working with another scientist, Metzger took tissue samples and attached electronic tracking equipment by securing the shark’s tail and then sending it back into the Atlantic after the incision was stitched. The tagging uses devices that transmit acoustic signals and sensors that log water temperature and depth before detaching. Data has shown tags detected across North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, returning the animals the following year. Rising summer water temperatures also appear to be bringing more tropical species north into Long Island waters.
