Major improvements coming to Walker County Public Fishing Lake
Walker County Public Fishing Lake near Jasper, Alabama, will close on Sept. 7, 2026 for a major upgrade project. The final day to fish there before construction begins is Sunday, Sept. 6, and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division will handle the temporary closure. Improvements include upgrades to the entrance road and parking lot, new restrooms, a new concession and bait shop, a new entry gate, and construction of a new event space. Alabama conservation officials say the work is expected to finish in summer 2027, with a possible reopening for fishing next spring depending on weather and other factors. The 163-acre lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, crappie, hybrid striped bass and seasonal trout. Updates will be announced when available.
