Over 5m hunting and fishing licenses are changing forever under new ID rule

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has introduced a major identity overhaul that changes how most hunting and fishing licenses are issued, effective Monday. The new rules require Texans and other customers aged 17 and up to present identification to obtain a hunting or fishing license, aiming to prevent fraud and ensure in-state pricing applies to Texas residents. The requirement covers most recreational hunting, fishing and combination licenses, as well as Super Combo licenses that bundle permits and one-day fishing passes. It does not apply to youth hunting licenses, and people under 17 do not need a fishing license. Texans can use an unexpired Texas driver’s license or state ID, including REAL ID. Limited-term-license holders may need additional documents, while out-of-state and foreign residents must provide their own REAL ID or passport, with some transactions handled in person and online via independent verification.
