Reel 'Em In For Free On National Fishing Day In New York State

New York State will allow fishing without a freshwater fishing license on National Hunting and Fishing Day, Saturday, September 26, in a statewide “free fishing day” for residents and non-residents. The event is the second-to-last of the year in the state’s inland waters; the next (and last) free fishing opportunity is Veterans Day on November 11. For both dates, the usual licensing or recreational marine fishing registration requirements are waived, though standard rules still apply, including size limits, daily catch limits, and protected species restrictions. The NYS DEC also offers a Fishing Rod Lending Program at more than 100 participating locations, such as public libraries, to borrow gear and beginner guides.
