Scilly freight ship arrives in Cornwall after 8,000‑mile journey
Scilly's new freight ship Menawethan arrived in Penzance, Cornwall after an 8,000-mile voyage from Vietnam via the Cape of Good Hope, bringing the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group closer to restoring year-round cargo service. The 45-meter (148-foot) vessel is designed to replace the aging Gry Maritha and is expected to begin sailing later this year. It underwent sea trials in Vietnam's South China Sea to test performance, propulsion, and manoeuvrability before heading to the UK. The milestone strengthens island communities off the South West peninsula that rely on regular freight links for goods and supplies.
Menawethan's voyage follows a two-month journey and completes a key phase in the fleet upgrade for Scilly's maritime links. Once in service, the ship will expand capacity and reliability for essential goods, supporting local businesses and residents who depend on timely deliveries. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group said certification and readiness would enable more consistent schedules later this year, with the new ship able to handle the challenging voyage from Vietnam via the southern seas. The replacement of Gry Maritha marks a long-term investment in the isles' connection to Cornwall and beyond.
