Seafood no longer included in Canada tariffs, a win for Maine lobstermen

Canada will remove seafood from its 25% retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., a reversal that Maine lobstermen are calling a win amid a fast-moving trade dispute. Mark Carney, Canada’s prime minister, announced new duties Tuesday in response to 50% U.S. tariffs that took effect over the weekend. From Sept. 8, Canada’s “dollar for dollar” measures were expected to affect $20 billion of U.S. goods, including seafood—Maine’s biggest export to Canada at nearly $300 million. Late Wednesday, Canada’s finance ministry said it was excluding fish and seafood “to protect against broader economic harms.” Patrice McCarron of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association said it protects the supply chain and avoids unnecessary harm at the border.
