Six feared dead after 'bizarre' sinking of charter boat off Canadian coast

A recovery operation in Canada is searching for six people believed to have drowned after a “bizarre” sinking of a fishing charter off Vancouver’s coast. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said an underwater team was preparing to search the Georgia Strait area near where freshwater meets the ocean, where conditions are expected to be hazardous. Officials believe the charter carried 10 people before it took on water and disappeared around midday Sunday after departing from Steveston. Police said none of the passengers were wearing life jackets and there was no mayday call from the charter, while a passing yacht crew made a critical mayday that helped them pull survivors aboard. Two survivors, a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were in critical condition, while another man (26) and a woman (33) were discharged. With no distress signals, investigators include the possibility of collision or criminal behavior.
