Teen rescued after clinging to capsized boat for days in frigid Alaska waters

A 15-year-old boy was rescued Monday in Alaska’s Bering Sea after clinging for two days to a capsized boat. The Coast Guard spotted him from aircraft and alerted a nearby fishing vessel to help. His older brother and cousin died in the incident. The group left the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island on Friday and was due to return early Sunday, according to the Coast Guard. With the boat missing, Coast Guard planes and helicopters began searching Monday after family members reported the three missing the night before. One aircrew located the teen, deployed a raft and supplies, and coordinated the recovery with the Northwest Explorer, which hoisted him to safety near the remote island. He had symptoms of hypothermia. The captain of the rescue vessel, Adam White, said the water was about 50°F and that the boy reported his brother was still under the skiff before his cousin slipped away. The community relies on halibut fishing.
