Tragedy at sea leaves teen stranded on overturned boat for nearly 3 days in frigid waters

A 15-year-old boy from Alaska was found alive nearly three days after being stranded on top of an overturned fishing boat in frigid Bering Sea waters. The Coast Guard located him on Monday, about 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island, roughly 100 miles west of mainland Alaska and around 40 miles from Russia’s Chukchi Peninsula. His 16-year-old brother and 39-year-old cousin died in the capsizing incident after the vessel, Northwest Explorer’s later partner Northwest Explorer, missed its scheduled return. The boy showed signs of hypothermia. Coast Guard aircrews dropped a life raft and coordinated the recovery with the motor vessel Northwest Explorer, after extensive multi-agency searches.
