Trout anglers to the fore as Mayo hosts world championship this week
xCruzo Brief
The 68th World Trout Fly Angling Championship is set for Lough Mask, Mayo, running from July 29 to August 2, with hundreds of anglers expected from across Ireland and competitors from the UK as well as countries including France and Germany. The event uses four heats—Wednesday July 29, Thursday July 30, Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1—with only up to one quarter of the weighed fish from each heat advancing to the Sunday final at Cushlough Pier. The winner will receive the World Silver Cup, a 19-foot lake boat and a 15HP Yamaha engine. Denis Kelleher, a long-serving committee member, says the traditional format with a provided boatman remains a key attraction for entrants.
