Year probe by a journalistic nonprofit: "Dirty secret behind the farmed fish you eat"
A journalistic nonprofit, through reporting by Urbina, focused on what it calls an opaque seafood supply chain and the “hidden crimes or concerns” that can precede the fish people eat. Urbina, based in Washington, told Axios he wants the seafood industry to become more transparent and accountable, and urged advanced-economy governments to account for how they shift costs onto developing countries. The report draws on findings published in The New York Times Magazine in a piece titled “The Dirty Secret Behind the Farmed Fish You Eat,” saying fish consumption has doubled over 60 years and that more than half of seafood now comes from aquaculture. It also notes farmed fish are fed with smaller wild fish, with a fifth of ocean fish used for non-human purposes like fishmeal and oil.
