Years after it sank, The Mistress is found near the wind farm off Block Island

A team using side-scan sonar and divers says it discovered the wreck of the commercial fishing boat Mistress near Block Island’s wind farm, along with human remains, about seven years after the Jan. 2019 sinking. The project is described in an anonymous Sept. 5 report sent to the Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board, and representatives of the families. The report says the vessel rests 92 feet underwater and roughly 50 feet from the base of the easternmost turbine, about 3 miles off Block Island. Divers reportedly found three small bones they believed to be human, leaving them in place for authorities to recover. Captain Oscar Diaz and deckhand John Ansay Jr. died; Oscar’s son Tim Diaz survived after rescue. The Coast Guard confirmed receipt of the report but said it would not comment until next of kin were notified.
