Brit sets mark for fastest hydrogen-powered car run | Arkansas Democrat Gazette

British driver Andy Green set a new hydrogen-powered land-speed record Tuesday at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, adding another milestone to his history of speed attempts. Green reached 406.320 mph in a 32-foot car powered by two hydrogen internal combustion engines with a combined 1,600 horsepower, according to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. The 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot drove the car across the salt, using engines adapted from JCB heavy machinery that mix pressurized hydrogen with air and ignite it. Green said the run showcased the technology and Bonneville’s racing conditions. The result was far from his overall 1997 jet-powered record of 763.035 mph.
