British driver Andy Green returned to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats on Tuesday to push hydrogen once more, setting another world record in hydrogen-powered land speed. Green hit 406.320 mph in a car built by JCB, powered by two hydrogen internal combustion engines with a combined 1,600 horsepower, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile reported. The 64-year-old, a retired Royal Air Force pilot and the first driver to break the sound barrier in a car, drove a 32-foot vehicle engineered for speed on the salt. The engines, adapted from JCB heavy machinery, combine pressurized hydrogen with air and ignite it. Green said the car’s interior was “probably a little hotter” than in his 1997 jet-powered record run.
