BYD says it will outline its next step for expanding in Malaysia within a week, as it weighs whether to partner with a local firm or build manufacturing capacity itself. Vice-president Liu Xueliang told Malaysian media at the Asia-Pacific Story session in Shenzhen that BYD will keep exploring cooperation with local partners to support Malaysia’s new energy vehicle (NEV) industry. When asked which route it will take, he declined to specify details and said to wait a week for an announcement. The update comes as Malaysia seeks deeper localisation across the EV supply chain. Reports earlier this year said BYD was evaluating a contract assembly arrangement at Sime Motors’ Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah, while a planned plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak appeared to stall. Separately, from July 1, imported/CBU EVs must meet RM200,000 minimum declared CIF value and 245 hp (180 kW) minimum power, after tax exemptions ended at the end of 2025.
