Carney says Trump's demands would dismantle Canadian auto industry as Ford warns U.S. could be cut off

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that U.S. trade demands confirm Canada’s fears that President Donald Trump is trying to dismantle the Canadian auto industry, after Trump threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel. Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned the dispute could escalate to cutting off electricity and critical minerals to the United States if conditions worsen. Carney said Canada remains willing to negotiate but only if Washington treats the talks as a partnership between sovereign countries, rejecting any stance that Canada is a “subsidiary” of the U.S. Ford argued Trump underestimated Canadians’ willingness to endure economic pain rather than yield, pointing to the integrated Canada-U.S. automotive sector and the importance of Canadian demand for U.S. jobs in states including Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama. Canada also announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning Sept. 8.
