Stop-Start Subsidies Split Europe: Italy Falls to 5.9% as France Hits Record 35%
Europe’s EV market hit a record 25.7% battery-electric share in July across 16 key markets, with Denmark nearing “saturation” at 80.1%. But the sharper lesson for policy came from Italy: its BEV share fell from 10.1% in June to 5.9% in July, while France reached a historic 35% share. The drop, the analysis says, wasn’t mainly about demand or model availability, but about how governments fund adoption—and what happens when support ends. Italy’s generous incentives, financed via its National Recovery and Resilience Plan with up to €11,000 for BEVs, expired at the end of June. A new €1.6 billion multi-year Fondo Automotive shifted support away from direct consumer grants, and from July 1 private buyers saw no point-of-sale subsidy. The article notes similar patterns in Germany and other markets.
