A U.S. court judge has accepted Latvian airline airBaltic’s request to enter Chapter 11, allowing the carrier to restructure its debt under the U.S. bankruptcy code, Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said on Sept. 16. The acceptance means airBaltic can immediately access financing, begin restructuring and review obligations to creditors, Kulbergs added. The airline, majority-owned by the Latvian government, voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 on Monday to cut a growing debt pile after increased financial pressure linked to the Iran war. airBaltic says it has a commitment for €350 million in financing, subject to court approval, and aims to complete the process around June 2027.
