Electric Trucks Have Moved From Impossible to Inevitable
xCruzo Brief
Global demand for zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles is rising fast enough to shift the debate from whether electric powertrains can move trucks to whether charging and grid infrastructure can scale. Sales grew 86% in 2025 to more than 520,000 units, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation. China drove nearly 90% of that figure, with Europe also accelerating: zero-emission trucks rose from about 2.5% to 4.5% of new sales. Battery-electric bus share increased from 18.5% to 24.8%. While diesel volumes remain far larger, the direction is clear: battery-electric heavy transport is moving from technical possibility to commercial scaling.
