Europe EV Sales Report: BEVs jump 39% and reach 24% Market Share!
Europe’s electric vehicle market strengthened in May, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) gaining share as total plug-in registrations rose. The report says nearly 400,000 plug-in vehicles were registered in Europe in May, including 275,000 pure electrics, while plug-ins were up 28% year-over-year. Growth for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) slowed, with May’s 10% YoY rate the lowest of the past 12 months, but BEVs accelerated, jumping 39% YoY. The BEV share rose to 69% of all plug-in sales in May, lifting BEVs’ yearly average to 68%. Year-to-date, BEVs hold a 22% share, compared with 32% for BEVs and PHEVs combined, exceeding the 2025 final results. In model rankings, the Tesla Model Y led with 17,028 registrations in May (+60% YoY) and starting prices around €40,000, while the BYD Atto 2 recorded 11,219 registrations and Tesla’s Model 3 followed with 11,116 (+264% YoY).
