Ever Wondered What a V11 Engine Sounds Like? Well, Here You Go

A modified 6.0-liter V12 Mercedes-Benz SL has been used to approximate the sound of an “impossible” V11 engine. The idea hinges on cylinder layout: a true V11 would require an uneven cylinder count between the two banks, so it can’t exist in a conventional design. YouTube channel Maisteer pulled plugs from the R230’s V12 to run it as a V11, then as a V10 and a V9 by deactivating specific cylinders. The V11 tone reportedly sounded surprisingly similar to the V12, though frequency meter readings showed clear changes at 400 Hz and 800 Hz. Deactivations reduced range and added bass, sliding toward a familiar V8 rumble.
