EVs win the sales race for the first time
xCruzo Brief
For the first time in Australia, electric vehicle sales topped every other powertrain type for a month. Using VFACTS and EV Council data, 27,078 EVs were sold in August, representing 24.9% of all vehicles sold—nearly one in four—an all-time record. EVs outsold petrol (25,824, down 32.6% year-on-year) and diesel (23,608, down 22.5%), but combined petrol and diesel sales still exceeded EV totals. Plug-in hybrids grew even faster: 10,591 PHEVs were sold in August, up 171.1% year-on-year. The top-selling EV was the Tesla Model Y with 6,414 sales.
