Faulty backup cameras are plaguing tens of millions of US cars

Glitchy backup cameras are tied to about 2,000 consumer complaints filed with U.S. safety regulators, and the issue has accelerated in recent months, according to the analysis. Examples cited include a Tesla Model 3 crashing into a cement pole after the rearview camera failed, a Ford pickup scraping a light post in reverse, and a Toyota minivan showing old images instead of live footage. Since the U.S. mandated rearview cameras in 2008, automakers have recalled about 21 million vehicles—nearly 6 million in the latest year alone. Including other mandated vehicle types, the total rises to nearly 28 million. The risk stems from interactions among displays, processors, and wiring.
