Haverhill man killed in wrong-way crash on I-93 in South Boston
A wrong-way crash on I-93 in South Boston Saturday night killed one man and sent a family of four to the hospital, according to Massachusetts State Police. Antone Carvalho, 81, of Somerset, is expected to face charges tied to the fatal multi-vehicle collision after allegedly traveling the wrong way southbound on I-93 North. Just before midnight, troopers responded to a crash on I-93 North before Exit 15A, where a 2004 Cadillac Escalade entered at Exit 15B, driving southbound in the northbound lanes. Reports say a Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4 attempted to avoid the vehicle and collided; the family of four in the Odyssey was taken to a Boston-area hospital for evaluation. After that, the Escalade struck a Chevrolet Cruze head-on, and Carvalho and the Cruze driver, a man in his 20s from Haverhill, were hospitalized; the man in his 20s died. The article also cites a series of prior wrong-way incidents and MassDOT improvements announced by Gov. Maura Healey involving 500+ high-risk locations.
