Heim hits wall, ruins tires, but collects a victory | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Corey Heim captured his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in the inaugural race at Naval Base Coronado after hitting the wall twice early and damaging tires during initial runs. The 23-year-old part-time driver from Marietta, Georgia, credited a reset in the second half as his No. 67 Toyota continued to get faster on the 16-turn, 3.4-mile street course on Coronado Island, south of downtown San Diego. Heim took the lead from teammate Tyler Reddick and drove the final three laps, then held pressure as Reddick made a mistake with five to go. Bubba Wallace finished second to secure a 1-2 for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. Reddick dropped to 25th after a flat tire, cutting his points lead to eight over Hamlin, who finished 14th. Shane van Gisbergen, after a crash triggered on Lap 32, finished 38th.
