New 3 ton limit restricts vehicles on Grosse Ile's Swan Island Bridge
A new 3-ton weight limit has been imposed on Grosse Ile’s Swan Island Bridge, sharply reducing vehicle access compared with the previous maximum of up to 40 tons. Officials said the revised threshold is roughly the weight of a full-size pickup truck or a large SUV. As a result, most commercial vehicles—including delivery trucks, garbage trucks, and moving trucks—now exceed the limit and cannot cross legally. The change follows a routine bridge inspection on June 23, implemented by the Wayne County Department of Public Services, which said it is exploring options to restore typical weights and traffic. Grosse Ile Township held a resident meeting on Friday to discuss the bridge and said it will contact affected residents regarding continued services and public safety. The police department communicated the restriction publicly after a sign previously indicated 33 to 40 tons.
