Two die and three seriously hurt in crash
Two die and three seriously hurt in crash on the A1 north of Alnwick, Northumberland, at the Wandylaw junction. At 04:00 BST on Saturday, a silver Nissan Juke southbound collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa traveling in the opposite direction, Northumbria Police said. The deceased include a woman in her 50s in the Juke and a man in his 40s in the Corsa, both pronounced at the scene; three others — two Juke passengers (a woman in her 20s and a teenage boy) and a Corsa passenger in her 20s — were taken to hospital in serious condition. The A1 section between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed for about 10 hours and has since reopened. Witnesses are urged to contact the Roads Policing Unit as investigations continue. The accident followed another fatal incident on the same stretch nine days earlier, and the government’s 2024 dualling plan for the road remains unfunded.
