SpaceX & Tesla 100-Gigawatt/Year US Solar System Production Plan Realistic?

SpaceX and Tesla leaders have floated a plan to build 100 gigawatts per year of solar manufacturing capacity in the United States within three years, covering cells and modules. The proposal faces significant hurdles but is analyzed for feasibility in the context of U.S. and global solar trends. pv magazine notes U.S. solar module manufacturing was about 45 GW in 2025 and is projected to reach 60 GW in 2026, driven by Inflation Reduction Act incentives. China had 1,156 GW installed capacity by end-2024, with roughly 200 GW added annually 2021–2024. Tesla has agreed to buy about $2.9 billion of equipment from Chinese suppliers Maxwell, S.C New Energy, and Laplace, with Section 301 tariff exemptions for solar manufacturing equipment extended through November 10, 2026.
