Pedestrian in 70s dies after being hit by car in Gateshead

A pedestrian in his 70s died after being hit by a car in Gateshead, Northumbria Police said. Officers received reports of the collision on Wealcroft, near the Staneway junction, at about 16:45 BST on Monday. The man was struck by a blue Volvo S40 and died at the scene. Police said an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has since been released on bail. Sgt Greg Huntley urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact the police.
