Rwanda to Host F1's African Grand Prix, Though Major Questions Remain
xCruzo Brief
Formula 1 has announced a landmark 10-year agreement to bring the African Grand Prix to Rwanda, ending long uncertainty about whether the sport would return to Africa after its 1993 exit from Kyalami. The exact start date and operational details remain unconfirmed, but the track has been selected: a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, near Kigali and close to Rwanda’s new international airport. The event will begin sometime in the 2030s, with organizers still needing to decide what race on the current 24-round calendar will be replaced. Rwanda becomes the third African country to host an F1 championship race, after Morocco in 1958 and South Africa in 1967–1985 and 1992–1993.
