Plug-In Hybrids With 70+ Miles of Electric Range Are Here Thanks to Volvo

Volvo says its refreshed XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids are now delivering much longer all-electric capability, helped by larger batteries. The updated models claim 78 miles of electric range for the XC60 and 73 miles for the XC90, surpassing the U.S. benchmark plug-in hybrid mentioned in the report: the Mercedes GLC’s 54-mile claim. Volvo contrasts those numbers with the outgoing XC60 and XC90, which dropped to roughly 32 to 35 miles on a topped-up battery. The key change is a battery jump to 38 kWh of usable energy from about 15 kWh. System output remains unchanged at 455 horsepower, with updates to styling and active safety features. A 360-degree camera adds a composite 3D view for the XC60.
