Possible Terror Plot at RAF Fairford Air Base in UK: What We Know

Five men were arrested Sunday after approaching RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwest England, in what UK counterterrorism police described as a possible thwarted plot targeting a British airbase used by the U.S. Authorities said suspicious vehicles were spotted near the base shortly after midnight following a phone call. Armed officers responded and the five men were detained on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act. The suspects were not named. Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing, said investigators were working closely with partners. The U.S. Air Force referred questions to British authorities; U.S. officials urged American citizens to exercise caution.
