Hyundai Motor’s South Korean labor union launched its first full strike in a decade on Friday after wage negotiations stalled. Around 40,000 Hyundai Motor union members were expected to walk out, with about 1,200 to 1,300 people joining a rally outside the company’s Seoul headquarters, where attendance was later projected at roughly 3,000. Workers from Hyundai, affiliate Kia and suppliers demanded a higher mandatory retirement age, up from the current 60, plus direct wage talks for parts suppliers and stronger job protections amid AI and automation. The walkout follows earlier partial strikes that disrupted 55,200 vehicles worth more than $1.67 billion, according to Yonhap estimates.
