Volkswagen recall affects Tiguan, Atlas and Audi Q3 SUVs over steering risk

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 208,724 SUVs in the United States after a steering rack mounting bolt can corrode and break, potentially causing drivers to lose steering control, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall includes certain 2018 Tiguan models, 2018 and 2019 Atlas models, and 2019 through 2021 Audi Q3 models built within specified production windows. NHTSA says moisture can enter around the right-side mounting bolt; corrosion may weaken it and fracture the bolt head. Volkswagen and Audi reported no crashes, fires, injuries, or deaths linked to the defect. Dealers will replace the bolt free of charge, with owner letters expected to begin Nov. 10.
