Volvo increases the batteries for 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in refresh

Volvo is refreshing the 2028 XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids, with the biggest change being a larger lithium-ion battery that more than doubles real-world electric range. Volvo points to a usable 37.9 kWh (41.2 kWh gross) pack for the XC60 T8, up from the 14.9 kWh used in a 2023 refresh and the 10.4 kWh net figure from 2018. That translates to 78 miles of electric range on the EPA cycle, enough for “three days” based on a median commute of 22 miles round trip. Styling updates include modified “Thor’s Hammer” headlights with matrix LED projectors, plus a refreshed 11.2-inch infotainment system with Gemini voice assistant. Production expands to Volvo’s South Carolina plant alongside Sweden, with the XC90 T8 receiving the same battery upgrade.
