JJ Wetherholt hit two home runs and drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals avoided a series sweep with a 12-10 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cardinals seized control early with a five-run first inning that included a three-run homer by Masyn Winn. Ivan Herrera followed with a three-run shot in the fifth to extend the lead to 12-7. Wetherholt finished 3-for-5, recording a leadoff homer and a two-run drive in the second, while Winn also added an RBI single in that frame. The Royals surged after trailing 9-2, highlighted by two-run homers from Nick Loftin and Jac Caglianone to make it 9-6. Caglianone’s 444-foot homer into the right-field fountain at Kauffman Stadium grew his streak to three games. St. Louis used seven relievers, with Gordon Graceffo (5-1) earning the win after Dustin May allowed six runs in two innings.
