Steve Waid, a NASCAR Hall of Fame journalist, passed away at 77 after a battle with cancer, leaving a lasting imprint on stock car coverage. Waid began his journalism career in 1970 after graduating from Old Dominion University, writing for local papers including the Martinsville Bulletin and Roanoke Times, before a decade with World News that broadened his scope into NASCAR reporting. In 1981 he became executive editor of Grand National Scene, later NASCAR Scene, guiding the publication for nearly 30 years until its 2010 closure. His work earned him the George Cunningham Award, the Henry T. McLemore Award, and the 2019 Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence, while he also served as president of the National Motorsports Press Association for 12 years and earned NMPA Hall of Fame honors.
