xCruzo Brief

Zoox’s robotaxi is moving closer to commercial service after the company unveiled a production-intent redesign on June 24, but the first paid rides will require federal approval. The updated, cube-shaped vehicle—nicknamed the “toaster” by riders—refines interior and exterior details while keeping the core architecture intact. Zoox says the vehicle remains a bidirectional electric pod with four-wheel steering, 40 cameras, radars, lidars, and infrared sensors, carrying four passengers up to 75 mph. The company plans to build 100 units per week at its Hayward, California facility and enter commercial service later this year. However, NHTSA approval is still pending following a public comment period that closed in April, meaning no rider can be charged yet. Zoox has already offered free service to more than 500,000 people in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami since September 2025.
