Hegseth in 'trouble' as Trump faces music on Iran war, midterms
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s future running the Pentagon is looking increasingly uncertain amid internal administration criticism tied to losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Two sources said President Trump is checking with allies about Hegseth’s standing; one described him as being in “a lot of trouble,” while the other said it’s unclear how at risk the job is. Separately, the administration is reviewing plans to resume military operations against Iran, one of the sources added. Trump publicly said his mind wasn’t made up on whether Hegseth would stay, telling reporters “You will know soon enough.” A senior Pentagon official told The Hill replacing him isn’t “practical,” citing Senate confirmation hurdles. On Capitol Hill, Hegseth faces demands for more transparency, with a Republican calling his position “completely untenable.”
