James Gunn's Superhero Flop Officially Beaten by $20M Ridley Scott-Esque Epic at the Box Office
James Gunn’s DCU film Supergirl was overtaken at the box office over the Fourth of July weekend as a smaller historical epic outperformed it by about $10.7 million. Released June 26, Supergirl saw an 80% second-weekend drop, then rebounded with a 56.7% day-on-day increase ahead of Independence Day. The film earned $3.6 million domestically on July 3, slipping to roughly $5 million on July 4 and 5 for a three-day total of $8.6 million. It ranked as the fourth-highest-grossing U.S. movie for the Independence Day period, behind Minions & Monsters, Toy Story 5, and the sleeper hit Young Washington, described as Ridley Scott-esque. Young Washington opened July 3 with $7.6 million and added $7.7 million on July 4, before a 46% day-on-day drop on July 5 to $4.1 million. Despite the decline, it totaled $19.4 million across the holiday weekend, beating Supergirl. The film is reported to have a $20 million budget and is distributed by Angel Studios.
