Legendary Canadian boxer George Chuvalo dies aged 89

George Chuvalo, often described as “Canada’s greatest warrior,” died Saturday at age 89, his birthday, according to Sully’s Boxing Gym. Known for his iron chin and durability, Chuvalo faced world-famous fighters including George Foreman, Joe Frazier, and Ali. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called him a heavyweight boxing legend and a Canadian icon. After retiring in 1978, Chuvalo toured as a public speaker focused on anti-drug education and mental health awareness, drawing on personal tragedy: he said three sons and his wife died from drug overdoses and suicide. He later appeared in the 1998 comedy Dirty Work and the 1986 horror film The Fly, and he worked as a guest commentator. He is survived by his eldest son Mitch, daughter Vanessa, grandchildren, and second wife Joanne.
