Netflix’s early-October additions put 10 character-driven indie films in the spotlight, emphasizing distinctive voices rather than major franchises. The guide highlights Blue Jay (2016), a black-and-white mumblecore-style reunion starring Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson in a single day of conversation. Also included is The Unknown Country (2022), directed by Morrisa Maltz, a Great Plains road trip focused on Lily Gladstone’s grieving Oglala Lakota woman and its patient, observational tone. Shy (2025) stars Cillian Murphy as a boarding-school headmaster dealing with addiction and hidden trauma, adapted from Max Porter’s novel and described as having hush-toned intensity. The roundup also points to Frances Ha (2012) and its deadpan humor anchored by Greta Gerwig, noting its continued availability on Netflix.
