Best use for Meta settlement funds point of debate | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
How states should use Meta’s settlement money is under debate after the company agreed to pay as much as $17 billion to resolve claims that it built Instagram and Facebook to keep children hooked. Attorneys general said funds should repair harms from unhealthy social media use, expand youth crisis intervention, and restore mental health and safety for children. However, most state spending terms in the agreement’s appendix specify little or no purpose: Wyoming sends all payments to its general fund, and Arkansas routes payments through its attorney general’s office. The total includes $459 million tied to a prior multistate Cambridge Analytica investigation. Experts note Meta may characterize parts as compensatory restitution for tax reporting, though spending obligations remain for states.
