Boy, 4, hospitalized after nearly drowning in Plantation, police say

A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized after nearly drowning in Plantation, Florida, according to police, after being found unresponsive in the water at about 7:46 p.m. on Saturday. Plantation Police said officers responded to reports of a drowning at 4650 W. Broward Blvd., where an adult pulled the child from the water and began CPR until first responders arrived. The boy was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he remained in critical but stable condition. The incident follows several other drowning and near-drowning cases across South Florida, including a near-drowning involving a 2-year-old in North Lauderdale and a separate case in Plantation where a 2-year-old boy died. Police said an investigation is underway. The Florida Department of Health cites drowning as the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 4 in the state, and officials and medical experts are urging “layers of protection,” such as adult supervision, physical barriers and CPR readiness.
