Burns patient treated at Southmead features in BBC documentary

A BBC Two documentary episode is highlighting specialist burns care and recovery at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Episode three of “Emergency 24/7,” broadcast Tuesday, September 1, and available on BBC iPlayer, follows the treatment journey of John, who suffered serious burns after a shed explosion. Chris Wearn, a burns consultant and clinical service lead for the Bristol Adult Burns Service, said the episode offers rare insight into emergency care and ongoing treatment for severe burns. Southmead’s burns service treated 2,375 patients in 2025, with 371 requiring admission and 17 going to intensive care. The team includes seven consultants plus burns nurses, therapists, a psychologist, and a dietitian, and is piloting an AI imaging system to estimate wound healing times.
